Overview

Bowhead seeks an Engineering Technician to support the Army Research Laboratory (ARL) on Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD.  This individual will provide electronics technician support for the Lethal Mechanisms Branch (LMB) within the Combat Capabilities Development Command (DEVCOM) ARL. Duty stations will be at the Experimental Facilities and Laboratory areas within the LMB, other ARL sites, as well as other DoD installations.

Responsibilities

The Technician will perform assignments that are not completely standardized or prescribed. Selects or adapts standard procedures or equipment, using fully applicable precedents. Receives initial instructions, equipment requirements, and advice from supervisor or engineer as needed; performs recurring work independently; work is reviewed for technical adequacy or conformity with instructions. Performs at this level one or a combination of such typical duties as:

  • Constructs components, subunits, and electronic devices, as well as modifying standard equipment. Will troubleshoot and correct malfunctions in electronic equipment.
  • Prepares Range facilities for experiments requiring selection, adaptation or modification of a wide variety of critical test equipment and test procedures; sets up and operates equipment; records data, measures and records problems of significant complexity that sometimes require resolution at a higher level; and analyzes data and prepares test reports.
  • Applies methods outlined by others to limited segments of research and development projects; constructs experimental or prototype models to meet engineering requirements; supports the conduct of tests or experiments and redesigns components or equipment as necessary; and records and evaluates data and reports findings.
  • Follows specific layout and scientific diagrams to construct and package simple devices and subunits of equipment as well as develops new methodologies for test equipment and data capturing devices and can also adapt such equipment for specific purposes.
  • Assists in the conduct of various tests or experiments which may require minor modifications in test setups or equipment as well as using subjective judgment in selecting, setting up, and operating standard and state of the art test equipment and recording test data.
  • Assists in building and assembling experimental set-ups, test fixtures, and stands using carpentry and machining skills to adapt test equipment to capture needed data without damage to said equipment. This involves intermittent requirements to repetitively lift parts such as special targets, metal plates and protective shields weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • The candidate must be proficient in the theory of collecting transient waveform data, application of signal conditioning equipment such as bridge circuits and amplifiers and associated equipment such as delay generators, signal generators and oscilloscopes.
  • Candidate is expected to become trained in all aspects of instrumentation used by LMB, within one year.  Has capability to instrument hardware, use a variety of oscilloscopes, data capturing devices, accelerometers, strain gauges and networks devices to  Data Acquisition equipment, as well as reduce relevant data. Independently called upon to support experimentation within Branch Facilities. Is familiar with and can set up and operate Photo Doppler Velocimetry (PDV) systems and can troubleshoot these systems and use them to capture specific fields of data. Makes significant contributions to various instrumentation trouble-shooting.
  • Capable of performing simple Microsoft Excel analysis of data
  • Within a year become Certified as an SME in electrical safety by the ARL Safety Office. Working with a licensed electrician if needed, researches and initiates electrical orders for purchasing though Govt mechanisms. Completely assesses and modifies electrical power systems, upgrades outdated equipment and works with all types of electrical systems from 110V to 480V systems.
  • Within 6 months, candidate can be responsible for instrumenting tests with a variety of data capturing devices, working with various engineers to achieve desired results. Can independently set up most experiments, relying very little on others for guidance in novel situations. Is proficient setting up Oscilloscope and associated programs.
  • Become trained to operate specific instrumentation to include, but not limited to; Phantom and Photron high-speed cameras, digital x-ray equipment, Faro laser scanner system, Digital Image Correlation (DIC) and various other instrumentation unique to LMB operations.
  • Follows appropriate standard operating procedures and adheres to applicable safety and security practices. Practices good housekeeping at facility to ensure that all procedures and practices are maintained, including periodic cleaning of experimental facilities, offices, storage areas, and grass mowing.

Qualifications

Requirements include, but are not limited to:

  1. Knowledgeable of Phantom/Photron high-speed camera operations.
  2. Proficient in standard digital photography.
  3. Associates degree in Electronics or 6 years of of applied experience in the electronics field, fabricating, testing, and troubleshooting electronic circuitry.

Physical Demands:

  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to twist, bend and squat periodically.
  • Must be able to work in all types of typical local weather conditions, at hieghts, and in confined spaces.

SECURITY CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS: Must currently hold a security clearance at the Secret level.  US Citizenship is a requirement for Secret clearance at this location.

In accordance with Executive Order 14042:  Ensuring Adequate COVID Safety Protocols for Federal Contractors, candidates should be aware that they may be required to have received or be willing to receive the COVID-19 vaccine by date of hire.
