Overview

Composite Materials Lab Technician (ARL-2023-19001-F)

 

Bowhead is seeking a Composite Materials Lab Technician to support the Composite and Hybrid Materials Branch in the Science of Extreme Materials Competency Division on Aberdeen Proving Ground (APG), MD.  The opportunity is a full-time position with career development and promotion possibilities based upon performance and skill development in this unique materials science and manufacturing field.

 

 

Responsibilities

  • Fabricate, process, test, and/or characterize prototype advanced materials including organic-matrix composite, ceramic, and metallic components to specifications.
  • Assist with maintaining the inventory of expendable materials which may include resins, vacuum bags, various fabrics, and processing media (e.g., hoses, tubes, buckets, stirring implements.)
  • Use and dispose of materials properly and according to safety protocols.
  • Document procedures from assembling assigned articles being fabricated in the labs.  
  • Will be called upon to use good judgment and initiative to recognize inconsistencies or gaps in data and seek to clarify of information from assigning engineers or experienced technician members of the team.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Prior expertise or professional exposure to:
    • Basic machining operations that may include water jet operations, milling machine set-up and operations, drill press use, table saw operation, and grinding machine.
    • Manufacturing processing equipment such as Gerber automated cutting table, autoclave, thermal hydraulic press (Wabash), or filament winding (all with on the job training).
    • Many of the operational equipment requires core knowledge and comfort using a computer terminal to communicate with the tool and machines. 
  • Willingness to take additional training in key software tools, such as CAD, Solidworks, or CG Tech Path planning software will be considered for highly qualified candidates after demonstration of aptitude or skill in tool operations.
  • Attention to detail, strong organizational skills. and the ability to communicate effectively with all levels of employees and outside contacts is required. 
  • Basic level skills in Microsoft Office software suite - Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and good judgment with the ability to work alone or as part of a team.
  • Must maintain at all time:
    • Secret security clearance
    • Certification to operate Bowhead and Government vehicles.

 Physical Demands:

  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds repetitively
  • Must be able to stand and walk for prolonged amounts of time
  • Must be able to twist, bend and squat periodically.

SECURITY CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to obtain a security clearance at the Secret level.  US Citizenship is a requirement for Secret clearance at this location.
