Overview

Examine and repair motor vehicles, snowmachines, and ATV’s, and boats. Occasional backup as a bear guard when needed

 

Summary

  • Regularly lift/move up to 50 lbs.
  • Examine vehicles to determine extent of damage or malfunctions.
  • Test drive vehicles, and test components and systems, using equipment such as infrared engine analyzers, compression gauges, and computerized diagnostic devices.
  • Repair, reline, replace, and adjust brakes.
  • Review work orders and discuss work with supervisors.
  • Follow checklists to ensure all important parts are examined, including belts, hoses, steering systems, spark plugs, brake and fuel systems, wheel bearings, and other potentially troublesome areas.
  • Plan work procedures, using charts, technical manuals, and experience.
  • Test and adjust repaired systems to meet manufacturers' performance specifications.
  • Confer with customers to obtain descriptions of vehicle problems, and to discuss work to be performed and future repair requirements.
  • Perform routine and scheduled maintenance services such as oil changes, lubrications, and tune-ups.
  • Disassemble units and inspect parts for wear, using micrometers, calipers, and gauges.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions

  • Maintains and repairs UIC Science fleet of trucks, vans, ATVs, snowmachines, and boats.
  • Small engine repair and maintenance: generator, augers, etc.
  • Tracks and updates maintenance records of vehicles.
  • Performs polar bear guard duties accompanying clients during field operations.
  • General labor: truck shuttles, freight haul, and some facilities maintenance
  • Other duties as needed

Knowledge and Critical Skills/Expertise:

  • Mechanical — Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
  • Computers and Electronics — Knowledge of circuit boards, processors, chips, electronic equipment, and computer hardware and software, including applications and programming.
  • Ability to test for and pass a Non-DOT pre-employment drug screening, and must follow all Non-DOT Drug and Alcohol testing program requirements
  • Must have a valid Alaska State Driver License with a 3 year clean driving record. Employee must follow all Authorized Driver Policy and Procedures regarding approved vehicle usage
  • Education/Experience Preferred: ASE Certified, USFWS polar bear hazing certification.

Qualifications

Required Experience:

  • 5 Years of Relevant Experience
  • Inupiaq Speaking Preferred.
  • Ability to use Ford and Chevy scan tools

Physical Demands:

  • Regularly lift/move up to 50 lbs.
  • Standing, walking, operating snowmachines and ATVs

Environmental Conditions:

Outside work in the winter is expected

 

 

Authorized Driver Requirement:  Employee must have a valid driver’s license and three (3) year clean driving record. Employee must follow all Authorized Driver Policy and Procedures regarding approved vehicle usage.

 

All employees must pass Non-DOT pre-employment drug screening and follow all UIC Non-DOT Drug and Alcohol Testing Program guidelines and requirements.

 

If working on a DOT project, employees must pass a DOT pre-employment drug screening and follow all DOT Drug and Alcohol Testing Program requirements.
