Overview

Welder/ Fabricator (ARL-2023-19215-F):

 

Bowhead is hiring a Welder/Fabricator to support the Army Research Laboratory (ARL) on Aberdeen Proving Ground (APG), MD.  The welder is required to fabricate and/or modify many unique and precision items in support of the Army Research Laboratory's programs.  Fabricated and/or modified items include, but are not limited to, armor test samples, test fixtures, target fixtures, instrumentation, military materiel, and specialized equipment.  The contractor shall have the technical competence to work efficiently and fabricate items while demonstrating proficiency in all modern and conventional welding techniques on various metals and thicknesses, specifically to include stainless steels, ferrous metals, and military armor.

Responsibilities

This individual performs prescribed assignments from the Supervisor or Team Leader.  Applies standard procedures or equipment, using fully applicable precedents.  Receives initial instructions, equipment requirements, and advice from supervisor or engineer as needed; performs recurring work independently; work is reviewed for technical adequacy or conformity with instructions.  Performs at this level, one, or a combination of such typical duties or requirements:

  • Maintain safety certifications required for operation of equipment and follow all applicable safety and security SOPs.
  • Communicate and treat co-workers and supervisor with respect and professionalism.
  • Perform arc welding, Tig and Mig, brazing, gas welding, and cutting with torch on a variety of steels and aluminum materials.
  • Communicate with scientists and engineers, assist in the interpretation of drawings or verbal instruction and specifications required, and translate those directions into applicable solutions.
  • Operate a forklift, overhead cranes, and other material handling equipment.
  • Operate bandsaws, grinders, drills, and other shop equipment as needed for assignments.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Demonstrated proficiency in arc welding, Tig and Mig, brazing, gas welding, and cutting with torch. All proficiencies performed on a variety of steels and aluminum materials.
  • Proficiency in plasma and carbon-arc not required, but preferred.
  • Ability to communicate with scientists and engineers, assist in the interpretation of drawings or verbal instruction and specifications required, and translate those directions into applicable solutions.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in arc welding, Tig and Mig, brazing, gas welding, and cutting with torch. All proficiencies performed on a variety of steels and aluminum materials.
  • Proficiency in plasma and carbon-arc not required, but preferred.
  • Ability to operate a forklift, overhead cranes, and other material handling equipment.
  • Ability to operate bandsaws, grinders, drills, and other shop equipment as needed for assignments.
  • Intermediate level skills in Microsoft Office software suite - Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of employees and outside contacts.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and good judgment with the ability to work alone or as part of a team.

 Physical Demands:

  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds repetitively.
  • Must be able to stand and walk for prolonged amounts of time.
  • Must be able to twist, bend and squat periodically.
  • Must maintain at all times:
    • Secret clearance
    • Certification to operate Government and Bowhead Equipment and Vehicles.

SECURITY CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to obtain a security clearance at the Secret level.  US Citizenship is a requirement for Secret clearance at this location.
