Overview

TECHNICAL WRITER (NSWC):

 

Bowhead seeks a Technical Writer to join our team in supporting the Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) Crane Division.  The Technical Writer will support, prepare, review, revise, and maintain technical documentation that incorporates information and data from Program Office, customer, end user, project leads, SMEs, and ISEAs. 

Responsibilities

Essential functions will include: 

  • Developing high-quality documentation with minimal guidance that is coherent and easy to follow, as well as complies with corresponding standard, style guide, and/or directive and meets the customers and end user’s needs.
  • Documentation includes but is not limited to technical manuals, training curriculum, training aids, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), user guides, test reports, work instructions, and presentations.
  • Researching, collecting, analyzing, organizing, and preparing technical information and data for desktop publishing staff to generate drafts.
  • Developing diagrams, charts, and graphs to enhance and increase the end user’s understanding.
  • Manipulating graphics, charts, diagrams, etc. to be included in documentation.
  • Editing and reviewing rough drafts for format, clarity, and adherence to editorial and government specifications.
  • Performing duties as the alternate Document Control Custodian (DCC), which include issuing document control numbers, maintaining document control register, and routing documents for review/approval.
  • Creating and maintaining templates, DTDs, EDDs, read/write rules, and structure applications.
  • Scheduling, attending, and participating in project meetings, as well as validation/verifications.
  • Tracking documentation for developing, planning, and scheduling purposes.
  • Collaborating with SMEs to ensure technical content is accurate, easy to understand, and consistent.
  • Immediately communicating obstacles or issues to leadership.
  • Interfacing with desktop publishers, logisticians, multimedia personnel, SMEs/ISEAs, and customer.
  • Maintaining records.
  • Recording and distributing meeting minutes.
  • Performing clerical/administrative duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • High School and 3 years of experience
  • Must possess excellent verbal/written communication and analytical skills, including the ability to develop general concepts into written procedures.
  • Background with technical writing or Ordnance and Non-Ordnance related Instructions and Standard Operating Procedures.
  • A self-starter who is comfortable working individually, as well as being a team player who understands the importance of teamwork, collaboration, and open communication ▪ Strong familiarity of military supply chain processes and product life-cycle management.
  • Ability to work at a Government facility in Crane, IN.
  • Position requires an understanding of software such as MS Word, additionally candidate will follow a template in such software.
  • Previous experience working with templates in Word and other software. Tasking involves reviewing documentation in the templates that are utilized in certain software, no programming required.  

Physical Demands:

  • Must be able to lift up to 10-20 pounds
  • Must be able to stand and walk for prolonged amounts of time
  • Must be able to twist, bend and squat periodically

SECURITY CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to obtain a  security clearance at the Secret level. Applicants who currently hold a Secret level clearance are strongly encouraged to apply.  US Citizenship is a requirement for Secret clearance at this location.
