Overview

Carpenter (ARL):

 

Bowhead is seeking a Carpenter to support the Army Research Laboratory (ARL) on Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD to provide carpentry and other cutting-related duties to support a wide variety of Army Research Laboratory Programs. 

Responsibilities

  • Designs, fabricates, and repairs high-grade wooden items such as fine cabinets, furniture, and unique testing apparatus to precise specifications.

  • Studies blueprints or drawings of articles to be constructed or repaired.

  • Plans sequence of cutting or shaping operations to be performed.

  • Marks outline or dimensions of parts on paper or lumber stock, according to blueprint or drawing specifications.

  • Matches materials for color, grain, or texture, sets up and operates woodworking machines, such as power saws, jointer, mortiser, tenoner, molder, and shaper, to cut and shape parts from Woodstock.

  • Trims component parts of joints to insure snug fit, using hand tools, such as planes, chisels, or wood files.

  • Bores holes for insertion of screws or dowels by hand or using boring machine, glues, fits, and clamps parts and subassemblies together to form complete unit using clamps or clamping machine, and drives nails or other fasteners into joints at designated places to reinforce joints.

  • Sands and scrapes surfaces and joints of articles to prepare articles for finishing.

  • May dip, brush, or spray assembled articles with protective or decorative materials, such as stain, varnish or paint.

  • May install hardware, such as hinges, catches, and drawer pulls.

  • Other duties as required

 

Employees will use Government tooling and equipment, both manual and CNC (i.e., hand tools, band saws, milling machines, lathes, machining centers, drill presses, brakes, punches, grinders, etc.) on-site at a Government facility.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent is required

  • Must possess basic carpentry skills, knowledge of hand and power tools, and building materials

  • Candidates with personal or residential carpentery experience may be considered

  • Basic level skills in Microsoft Office software suite - Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint

  • Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of employees and outside contacts

  • Strong interpersonal skills and good judgment with the ability to work alone or as part of a team

  • Must maintain certification at all times to operate Bowhead and Government vehicles

Physical Demands:

 

  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds repetitively
  • Must be able to stand and walk for prolonged amounts of time
  • Must be able to twist, bend and squat periodically
  • Work is frequently outdoors in extreme weather conditions, near moving parts and equipment, and on slippery or uneven surfaces
  • Will be frequently exposed to wet or humid conditions, airborne particles, loud noises and other hazards.

 

SECURITY CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to obtain a security clearance at the Secret level.  US Citizenship is a requirement for Secret clearance at this location.
