Overview

Join the UMIAQ Environmental North Slope Brough Spill Response team! UMIAQ Environmental is looking for residents in all North Slope communities to join an ‘on call, as needed” spill technician to assist in spill clean-up as they occur.


This position will provide general land-based oil spill response labor or equipment operations support as assigned. Equipment may involve oil skimmers, boom, front-end loaders or other ancillary gear. The spill technician may be called upon to participate in spill response drills and exercises as needed to maintain client’s spill response compliance. Spill technician will be asked to take pictures of the spill and work with the project manager to help determine the type of response needed, they will be asked to inventory the spill conex monthly and provide a report back to the project manager. Spill technicians will be required to follow all UIC and client safety policies and procedures and perform other duties as assigned by the Project Supervisor.

This is an on call as needed position. These positions are flexible to match your availability. UIC will provide paid spill response training online.  This position could be called on as a field technician for other projects UMIAQ Environmental is working on in the community.

$25/hour for training and $30/hour for spill response. Travel is not required. Village spill responders may be asked if they are willing and able to travel to other North Slope communities depending on need.

Responsibilities


Minimum Skills/Experience Required:

• Ability to learn oil spill response tactics for Arctic environment.

• Ability to execute instructions and remain flexible in a dynamic work environment.

• Must be able to successfully complete a 40-hour HAZWOPER course and annual 8-hour refresher course.

• Must be able to read and write the English language.

Qualifications

Physical Demands:

• Twisting/turning upper and lower body.

• May be required to climb ladders and stairwells.

• May be required to work at heights.

• May be required to wear a respirator.

• Lifting, carrying and pushing/pulling up to 50 pounds.



Environmental Conditions:

• May work in cramped, confined spaces.

• May work in fog, dark, and other visibility limiting conditions common to the North Slope.

• May be exposed to fuels, solvents, cleaners, dust, fumes, smoke, and gases.

• Irregular working hours.

• Arctic environment including low temperatures, high wind, icing, plenty of moisture.

• Predominantly working outdoors; may be on slippery/uneven ground.

• Frequent hazards include hypothermia, heat stress, pinch points, sprains, strains, slips, falls, concussive impacts, and lifting injuries.

Where driving may be required or where a rental car must be obtained for business travel purposes, applicants must have a valid driver license for this position and will be subject to verification. In addition, the applicant must pass an in-house, online, driving course to be authorized to drive for company purposes.
