INDOOR RANGE TECH (2023-19891):


Bowhead is hiring an Engineering Technician to support an indoor Ballistics Range Technician for the Army Research Laboratory (ARL) on Aberdeen Proving Ground (APG), MD.  This individual performs standardized or prescribed assignments involving a sequence of related operations.


They will follow standard work methods on recurring assignments but receives explicit instructions on unfamiliar assignments; technical adequacy of routine work is reviewed on completion; non-routine work may also be reviewed in progress.  Performs at this level one or a combination of such typical duties as:

  • Following specific instructions, assembles or constructs simple or standard equipment or parts; may service or repair simple instruments or equipment.
  • Conducts a variety of tests using established methods. Prepares test specimens, adjusts and operates equipment, and records test data, pointing out deviations resulting from equipment malfunction or observational errors.
  • Extracts engineering data from various prescribed but non-standardized sources; processes the data following well-defined methods including elementary algebra and geometry; presents the data in prescribed form.
  • Conducts maintenance/upkeep (sweeping, general organization and housekeeping) of facility when necessary; modifies facility as required for specific projects.
  • Performs instrumented experiments as tasked by government facility manager.
  • Becomes Certified Ammo Handler.
  • Helps train lower-level personnel.
  • Becomes small and medium caliber loader-gunner (Category G-II).
  • Begins training to become an indoor test director.
  • Checks drawings provided by engineers and scientists to determine the adequacy of the drawings for target construction and successful completion of the associated test.
  • Conducts experiments which may require minor modifications in test setup or procedure.
  • Operates standard test equipment; x-rays, high speed and still cameras, hardness testers, digitizers, etc.
  • Performs non-routine and complex assignments involving the reduction of instrumentation data that documents the results of ballistic experiments; digitizing x-rays, high sped imagery manipulation, etc.
  • Troubleshoots and correct equipment malfunctions.
  • Passes all required training deemed necessary by the facility manager and is familiar with all sites and facility SOPs.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Abides by all safety and security requirements.
  • Completes all required ARL and Bowhead training (safety, security, hazardous material, equipment, etc.), certifications, and medical exams according to established deadlines.


  • High school degree or equivalent.
  • Abide by all safety and security requirements.
  • Be able to take direction from more experienced co-workers.
  • Be proficient in use and understanding basic measuring devices (tape measures, scales, micrometers).
  • Possess basic computer skills (e-mail, word, excel).
  • Possess basic carpentry skills/use of hand and power tools.
  • Basic level skills in Microsoft Office software suite - Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of employees and outside contacts.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and good judgment with the ability to work alone or as part of a team.


Physical Demands:

  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds repetitively.
  • Must be able to stand and walk for prolonged amounts of time.
  • Must be able to twist, bend and squat periodically.

SECURITY CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to obtain a security clearance at the Secret level.  US Citizenship is a requirement for Secret clearance at this location.
