The UIC Science Arctic Safety Specialist manages all aspects of the UIC Science health, safety and environmental program. This position ensures a safe operating environment for UIC Science employees and clients to meet regulatory, company, and client expectations. The Arctic Safety Specialist is responsible for data entry and maintenance of a training database, record keeping, and reporting related to all job functions. This position will require time in the field away from home.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions

  • Manages operational safety in Utqiaġvik, remote Alaska locations, and coastal and inland waters.
  • Develops safety standard operating procedures.
  • Inspects and maintains facilities for OSHA compliance.
  • Trains team members in safe operating protocols.
  • Arranges team safety trainings and maintains records of certifications.
  • Oversees proper storage of hazardous goods and shipping/receiving of hazardous materials.
  • Provides snowmobile and ATV training curriculum to clients.
  • Develops curriculum and conducts Arctic Field Training to clients and UIC personnel.
  • Conducts client pre-deployment safety orientations.
  • Adjusts orientation materials as necessary to meet changing internal and client requirements.
  • Maintains records of insurance and registration for fleet vehicles.
  • Prepares reports and presents safety updates to clients.
  • Works closely with UIC Science Facilities Manager, Facilities Maintenance Technician, Laboratory Manager, and Project Managers.
  • Provides logistical and administrative support as requested.
  • Maintains training material library.
  • Performs and oversees data entry for training and facilities databases.
  • Maintains and provides quality control for training, training records and documentation.
  • Maintains Safety Data Sheet (SDS) Binders in all facilities and adjust as necessary.
  • Maintains Site Specific Safety Plans for UIC Science.
  • Facilitates and completes project risk assessments for each supported project.
  • Maintains project safety files on the SharePoint site.
  • Other Duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Critical Skills/Expertise:

  • Advanced level skills in Microsoft Office software suite - Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint
  • Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of employees and outside contacts. To receive and respond to instructions/assignments, must be able to read, write and speak English. 
  • Strong interpersonal skills and good judgment with the ability to work alone or as part of a team

Qualifications

Required Experience:

  • High School diploma required
  • Associates or Bachelor degree in safety related field preferred
  • 5 years experience working in remote and extreme weather environments
  • Experience operating snowmachines and ATVs
  • Experience working in Indigenous Communities
  • Experience with facilities maintenance and management preferred

 

Physical Demands:

    • Must be able to lift up to 15 to 25 pounds 
    • Must be able to stand and walk for prolonged amounts of time
    • Must be able to twist, bend and squat periodically
    • Occasional field work and deployment to remote locations may be required.

Drug and Alcohol Testing Programs

All employees must pass Non-DOT pre-employment drug screening and follow all UIC Non-DOT Drug and Alcohol Testing Program guidelines and requirements.

If working on a DOT project, employees must pass a DOT pre-employment drug screening and follow all DOT Drug and Alcohol Testing Program requirements.
