Position Summary:

Bowhead Transport LLC seeks an experienced Maritime Manager of Engineering to oversee all aspects of predictive, preventive, and corrective maintenance and repairs for its fleet. This role is responsible for managing engineering operations, including propulsion mechanics, power generation systems, electrical systems, fuel systems, water distillation, HVAC, fire suppression, emergency equipment, and deck equipment maintenance.

The ideal candidate will be responsible for ensuring regulatory compliance, managing engineering personnel, overseeing dry-dock and shipyard activities, and coordinating maintenance strategies to optimize vessel performance and longevity.

Responsibilities

Engineering & Maintenance Oversight:

  • Manage all mechanical, electrical, and structural maintenance and repairs across the fleet.
  • Develop and implement preventative and corrective maintenance schedules to maintain vessel operability.
  • Ensure proper record-keeping of all maintenance activities in accordance with regulatory and company policies.
  • Conduct dry-dock planning, budgeting, and execution, ensuring compliance with all regulatory and class society requirements (USCG, ABS, State of Alaska).
  • Oversee coating applications to mitigate corrosion and extend asset lifespan.

Regulatory Compliance & Safety:

  • Ensure compliance with USCG 46 CFR Part 92 and 46 CFR Part 144 requirements for crew accommodations and vessel safety.
  • Interface with state and federal regulatory bodies, including the USCG, ABS, and EPA.
  • Lead efforts to maintain safety and operational integrity through regular inspections and audits.

 

 

Management & Leadership:

  • Supervise engineering staff, including Port Engineers, Project Managers, and Site Supervisors.
  • Assist the Port Engineer / Project Manager with data collection, maintenance tracking, and training of staff.
  • Develop and implement strategic plans, budgets, and cost controls for engineering operations.
  • Recruit, train, and mentor engineering personnel, ensuring performance meets operational standards.
  • Oversee personnel scheduling, contract negotiations, and workforce planning & training.

Business & Operational Development:

  • Manage multiple contracts within the Logistics & Marine Group.
  • Develop and strengthen relationships with clients, vendors, and regulatory agencies.
  • Lead proposal development and business planning, aligning operations with company capabilities.
  • Provide program management and ensure contract deliverables are met.
  • Travel to various locations for meetings, inspections, and operational leadership.

Qualifications

Qualifications & Experience:

  • 10+ years of maritime engineering and operations experience OR a Bachelor’s degree in Marine Engineering, Marine Transportation, or related field with 5+ years of relevant experience. A QMED (Qualified Member of the Engine room Department) or DDE (Designated Duty Engineer)
  • Experience with tug & barge, small boat maintenance, and shipyard operations.
  • Knowledge of shipboard systems, including propulsion, electrical, fuel, HVAC, and safety equipment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Smartsheets) Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to explain complex technical matters clearly.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects across various geographic locations.
  • PMP certification is preferred but not required.
  • Must be able to pass an annual Merchant Mariners physical exam and perform physically demanding shipboard duties.
