Overview

UIC Construction seeks a Medium Duty Mechanic to support the Heavy Equipment Department as a key member of the project team. This position is responsible for coordinating with the Barrow-based Heavy Duty Shop Foreman to maintain, repair, and support UIC Construction’s fleet of approximately 400 construction vehicles and equipment. The Technician will play a critical role in ensuring equipment readiness and operational efficiency across all construction projects.

Responsibilities

Essential functions will include:

  • Coordinate with HD Shop Foreman and other HD Shop Mechanics in identifying and prioritizing all repair and maintenance needs.
  • Identify and create recommended service plans for needed repairs found during repair or servicing of the equipment.
  • Work with the HD Shop Foreman and other HD Shop Mechanics to diagnose machine problems and conduct repairs.
  • Work with Shop Foreman and other HD Shop Mechanics to identify parts and wear items to be ordered in anticipation for repairs.
  • Receive guidance and instructions from Heavy Equip Mgr. & Shop Foreman on a regular basis in the effort of constantly improving on production and performance.
  • Must be familiar with electronics, wiring diagrams and use of electronic diagnostic equipment to troubleshoot repairs.
  • Must be able to look at mechanical, hydraulic and electrical systems, identify problems, and think about possible solutions.
  • Use company provided software to document repairs, create recommended service plans, parts ordering and vehicle inspections. Detailed and clear documentation is a must.
  • Occasional travel within Alaska to provide service and repair support to UIC Construction at remote jobsites (food, flights, housing provided by UICC).
  • Occasional outdoor service and repair work when equipment cannot be transported to HD Shop.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge & Critical Skills/Expertise:

  • Strong technical background.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • In depth knowledge of Construction Equipment technology.
  • Able to multi-task.
  • Must be proficient with computer skills and able to use employer provided work flow management software. Such as Fleet Maintenance Pro, Word, Excel & Outlook.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Post-secondary degree in diesel technology, heavy equipment mechanics, small engine repair, engineering, or related field; may be substituted with 10 years of heavy-duty shop experience.

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Familiarity with CAT, John Deere, Volvo, and other competitive heavy equipment products.

  • Valid driver’s license is required. Candidates with a CDL will be preferred.  

Physical and Mental Demands:

  • Regularly required to stand, walk, bend, climb, and crouch in various environments.

  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs frequently and up to 75 lbs occasionally.

  • Manual dexterity and mechanical aptitude required for working with hand and power tools.

  • Visual acuity and attention to detail for diagnosing equipment issues and performing repairs.

  • Ability to work in physically demanding conditions for extended periods, including crawling under or climbing onto equipment.

  • Must be able to handle stress, shifting priorities, and respond to urgent maintenance needs.

  • Requires focus, decision-making, and safe practices while operating or working near heavy machinery.

Working Conditions:

  • Primarily shop-based with frequent work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including extreme cold or heat.

  • Exposure to noise, dust, grease, fuel, and other hazardous materials or fumes.

  • May work in confined spaces, elevated platforms, or uneven surfaces.

  • Occasional travel to remote job sites or field locations required.

  • Use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) required at all times.

  • Work schedule may include extended hours, weekends, and on-call rotation during peak project periods.
