Overview

UMIAQ Design is seeking a Survey AutoCAD Operator to support ongoing survey and design projects. The position offers the opportunity to work on a variety of long-term initiatives as part of a small, collaborative team of professionals. This role follows a rotational schedule of two weeks on and two weeks off.

Responsibilities

Essential functions to include:

  • Check and verify field notes, sketches, and data for accuracy.

  • Set up and support field crews, including equipment calibration and data collector file processing.

  • Archive and manage survey drawings, field notes, and related documentation.

  • Perform survey calculations and volume computations using standard methods and Excel.

  • Produce as-built surveys, permit drawings, and topographic maps to project specifications.

  • Assist the Survey Manager in planning, coordinating, and controlling field operations.

  • Conduct research and pre-calculations in preparation for field surveys.

  • Lead and mentor field crew members to ensure efficient, cost-effective survey execution.

  • Communicate project status and technical issues with on-site client supervisors.

  • Accurately prepare administrative records for time keeping and project billing.

  • Continuously develop proficiency in surveying methods and AutoCAD through training.

  • Recommend improvements to equipment use and workflows to enhance department efficiency.

  • Read and interpret maps, construction plans, and technical documents to guide survey tasks.

Knowledge and Critical Skills/Expertise:

  • Experience with boundary and location surveys.

  • Proficiency in topographic and design surveys.

  • Skilled in conducting GNSS (GPS) surveys.

  • Knowledge of route location surveys and alignment principles.

  • Familiarity with construction staking procedures and survey layout standards.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 3 years of survey experience; or

  • Completion of a college degree program in land surveying or a closely related field.

Physical and Mental Demands:

  • Ability to sit for extended periods working at a computer.

  • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally (e.g., survey gear or document boxes).

  • Strong visual acuity and hand-eye coordination for detailed drafting work.

  • Requires mental focus and attention to detail when processing field data and preparing survey drawings.

  • Must be able to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

  • Occasional fieldwork may require bending, kneeling, and walking on uneven terrain.

Working Conditions:

  • Work is primarily performed in an office environment with standard office equipment.

  • Occasional exposure to outdoor field environments, including variable weather and terrain.

  • May involve travel to remote locations depending on project needs.

  • Standard work hours with some overtime or adjusted schedules based on project deadlines.

  • Field visits may require use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as hard hats or high-visibility vests.
