Journeyman Boilermaker ***Must be member of Local Union 502*** Construct, assemble, maintain, and repair aboveground tanks of all sizes and shapes. Align structures, plate, or pipe sections to field erect tanks and/or piping, following blueprints. Work involves use of hand and power tools, plumb bobs, levels, wedges, dogs, or turnbuckles. Work also involves manual, semi-automatic, and automatic weld machines, tank scaffolding, rolling scaffolding, stationary scaffolding, shell buggies, and other tank related equipment. Assist in testing assembled vessels, including vacuum box, oil penetrant, and hydrostatic testing.


Essential Functions:

� Erect, modify, and repair field welded water and fuel storage tanks, and associated appurtenances.

� Examine boilers, pressure vessels, tanks, or vats to locate defects, such as leaks, weak spots, or defective sections, so that they can be repaired. � Bolt or arc weld pressure vessel structures and atmospheric structures together, using wrenches or welding equipment.

� Inspect assembled vessels or individual components, such as tubes, fittings, valves, controls, or auxiliary mechanisms, to locate any defects.

� Repair or replace defective pressure vessel or tank parts, such as safety valves or regulators, using torches, jacks, caulking hammers, power saws, threading dies, welding equipment, or metalworking machinery.

� Attach rigging and signal crane or hoist operators to lift heavy frame and plate sections or other parts into place.

� Bell, bead with power hammers, or weld pressure vessel tube ends to ensure leakproof joints.

� Lay out plate, sheet steel, or other heavy metal and locate and mark bending and cutting lines, using protractors, compasses, and drawing instruments or templates.

� Install manholes, handholes, taps, tubes, valves, gauges, or feedwater connections.

� Study blueprints to determine locations, relationships, or dimensions of parts.

� Straighten or reshape bent pressure vessel plates or structure parts, using hammers, jacks, or torches.

� Inspects work site to determine presence of obstructions and to ascertain that holes cut for pipe will not cause structural weakness.

� Plans installation or repair to avoid obstructions and to avoid interfering with activities of other workers.

� Cut pipe, using saws, pipe cutter, hammer and chisel, cutting torch, and pipe cutting machine.

� Thread pipe, using pipe threading machine.

� Bend pipe, using pipe bending tools and pipe bending machine.

� Assemble and install variety of metal and nonmetal pipes, tubes, and fittings, including iron, steel, copper, and plastic.

� Welds together metal components of products, such as pipelines as specified by layout, blueprints, diagram, work order, welding procedures, or oral instructions, using electric arc-welding equipment.

� Connect pipes, using threaded, caulked, soldered, brazed, welded, or cemented joints, and hand tools. Secure pipes to structure with brackets, clamps, and hangers, using hand tools and power tools.

� Increase pressure in pipe system and observes connected pressure gauge to test system for leaks.

� May weld pipe supports to structural steel members.


Knowledge & Critical Skills/Expertise:

� Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.

� Knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principals involved in production of precision technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models.

� Knowledge of raw materials, production processes, quality control, costs, and other techniques for maximizing the effective manufacture of goods. � The ability to quickly and repeatedly adjust the controls of a machine or a vehicle to exact positions.

� The ability to see details at close range (within a few feet of the observer).

� The ability to apply general rules to specific problems to produce answers that make sense.

� Using either control mechanisms or direct physical activity to operate machines or processes.

� Inspecting equipment, structures, or materials to identify the cause of errors or other problems or defects.

� Servicing, repairing, adjusting, and testing machines, devices, moving parts, and equipment that operate primarily on the basis of mechanical (not electronic) principles.

� Monitoring and reviewing information from materials, events, or the environment, to detect or assess problems.

� Watching gauges, dials, or other indicators to make sure a machine is working properly.

� Controlling operations of equipment or systems.

� Conducting tests and inspections of products, or processes to evaluate quality or performance.

� Performing routine maintenance on equipment and determining when and what kind of maintenance is needed.

� Determining causes of operating errors and effectively addressing such errors.

� Determining the kind of tools and equipment needed to do a job.

� Able to pass SMAW carbon steel plate weld test in the 2G, 3G & 4G positions.

� Able to pass a GTAW 2 XXS carbon steel tube weld test in the 6G position is a plus, but not required.

� Able to pass a GMAW Aluminum plate test in the 2G, 3G, &4G position is a plus but not required.

� Resume must show experience with tank construction work, including erecting and welding API 650 and fuel storage tanks and AWWA water storage tanks.

� Must demonstrate solid experience in crane and forklift hand signals.


Required Experience:

� 5+ years field erecting API 650 fuel storage tanks and AWWA water storage tanks. Must be able to pass jobsite qualifications in SAW, SMAW, FCAW processes in the 1G/6G position as a condition of employment. .5+ years crane operating experience is a plus, but not required.

� Noise level can be high at times.

� Walking on uneven surfaces.

� Working on or around hazardous machinery.

� Ladders, scaffolding, towers, surfaces, 4 to 100 above ground

� Stairs. Support UIC incident free safety culture and assume personal accountability and responsibility for the safe performance of the job, both for personal safety and that of fellow workers. This includes the proper use of PPE, safety equipment, and adhering to safe work practices. Take necessary actions to stop or correct unsafe behaviors or conditions and, if appropriate, report them to the site Supervisor. Become familiar with company policies, pertinent standards, work instructions or safe operating procedures. Maintain good attendance and actively participate with a positive attitude. OSHA 10-Hour Construction Safety Card preferred A candidate must be able to meet the following non-exclusive requirements: 1. Meet the UIC Safe Driver Auto Policy & Procedures 2. Take and pass a pre-employment drug test which may include both UA, saliva and hair testing. 3. Meet the physical requirements of this position including working in a remote location under arctic conditions. Physical demands to include: � Use of hands and fingers simultaneously with repetition.

� Ability to lift objects up to 50 lbs.

� Climbing, stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching or crawling.

� Pulling or pushing.

� Reach/relocate items above shoulders.
